1/48 F 100D Super Saber by Larry Davis

Member Larry Davis built this Vietnam era F-100D of the 510th TFS (the Buzzards) based at Don Muang AB, Thailand in 1963. It was the first USAF unit to fly combat in the Vietnam War “officially”. Larry used a Trumpeter 1/48 F-100D kit with several additions to the cockpit in both AMS resin seat and some Eduard cockpit pieces. The gear bays have full Eduard PE set added. Wheels/tires are scratch built to correct width and height and then cast in resin courtesy of member John Shimek. The 450 gallon Hindenburg drop tanks are scratch built using F-101 Voodoo tanks as a start and added scratch built pylons. Stabilizers were modified to indicate proper ‘droop’. The afterburner is an Aires resin piece.
Cockpit interior is Model Master 36231 Grey and NATO Black side consoles; with the gear bays painted Model Master 34227 Bronze Green. The finish is in Alclad shades of various tones. The ‘hot section’ is done in multiple tones of Alclad with candy red and candy blue sections. Decals are from a Scale-Master sheet.
Larry states that he built this model in tribute to Ed Kinney, one of the founders of our chapter. Ed had built this in 1/72 scale back in 1972 and it was gorgeous and Larry wanted to build a larger scale of Ed’s model and here it is.
Great job Larry!
