Our Mission:
IPMS Fame Cities’ – ‘Ed Kinney Chapter’ – Mission is to support and grow interest in the static scale modeling hobby in the Akron/Canton area of Northeast Ohio. We will do this through regularly scheduled meetings which include “how-to” demonstrations as well as displays of members’ projects, low-key competition involving various themes, and social events such as Chapter picnics, auctions, etc to provide an atmosphere of camaraderie. We welcome modelers interested in all genres and all ranges of talent and experience. While we strongly encourage membership in the IPMS USA national organization, this is optional.
Chapter History:
In 1998, Ed Kinney, John Noack, and Ralph Nollan were members of IPMS John Glenn in Cleveland which, at that time, boasted over 40 members. It was felt that the chapter would not be hurt by the trio attempting to revive the defunct IPMS Canton Chapter. IPMS Fame Cities was officially chartered, and the chapter’s first officers were Jim Bates (President), Mike Koss (Vice President), Rick Slagle (Secretary), Mike Stepic (Treasurer), and John Noack (Chapter Contact). The first meeting had about 15 modelers in attendance and these initial meetings held at Ed Kinney’s office. MAPS Air Museum was used as a meeting location for a time, followed by the Green Public Library. Membership and attendance steadily grew, a larger space was needed, and then ACME Fresh Market Store located at Dogwood Center Shopping Center, 1474 N Main St, North Canton, Oh through December 2019 and starting in January 2020 we will call Simpson United Methodist Church, 4900 Middlebranch Road, Canton Oh our new home! In October of 2013, chapter members approved to honor co-founder Ed Kinney by modifying the chapter name to IPMS Fame Cities – Ed Kinney Chapter.
Monthly Meetings:
Meetings are held at 6:30 pm on the THIRD Monday of every month, at the Simpson United Methodist Church 4900 Middlebrach Road, Canton, Ohio 44705 on the 3rd Monday of the month. Meetings begin with a report from each of the club’s officers and an overview of current club events and business. This is followed by a “show-and-tell” session where club members display and discuss their current modeling projects. The meeting concludes with a demonstration by one of the club members focusing on a specific genre of modeling or a specific modeling technique. Meetings generally last two hours. Theme contests are held several months of the year sponsored by individual club members, and are open to all members.
